Fall Decorating on A Showstring

Ah, the glorious colors of Fall! Who doesn't love this season, with the beautiful leaves, colorful pumpkins and funny scarecrows. Fall has got to be my favorite season! I love to decorate for fall: it's cheap and easy with so many glorious, natural colors around you!
Here are some simple and frugal ideas to get into the swing of the season. I tend to enjoy craft and gardening projects that decorate my home, so many of these suggestions are a bit "crafty". Send me your favorites, I will be happy to post them!

Salt dough
Whip up a batch of salt dough (1 cup flour, 1 cup salt, 1/2 cup wateror enough to make a nonsticky dough) and cut into fall shapes or use a fall cookie cutter (leaves, pumpkins, etc).Bake at 200 degrees,30 minutes per side, more if item is thick or large. Paint and hang in windows, on a stick "tree"anchored in more salt dough, the sky is the limit! Shape into fall figurines for knick knacks- such Indians, Pilgrims, animals, etc.
Paper mache'
Combine equal portions of flour and water, soak news paper strips in them. Drape over a form- a balloon, a bottle. dry and add more layers, using a paste of flour and water as "glue" if necessary. You can make pumpkins, Halloween masks, you name it!
Tin Can Luminarias
Use large, clean cans, such as coffee cans. Put water in them and freeze. Tape a "pattern" of the hole you want to punch into the can, then punch holes with a nail and hammer. Be careful! Dump out ice, dry out and paint can, if desired. Put sand on bottom of can, put in candle and light. Arrange several on the ground, liining your walkway.

Vintage Halloween

So I love to collect vintage Halloween items and I wanted to give you some websites in case you also like to do that too.  I have just started my collection and last year I bought some things in Tuesday Morning, TJ Maxx and Marshall's but online here is some nice places to visit.

This first store has vintage cardboard decorations, signs, old repro games, etc...

Ok this is a how to but want to try it out:

Chandelier Shades and Party Favors How-To
1.  Cover small balloons with one layer of orange tissue paper and one  layer of yellow. Trace silhouettes onto black tissue paper, and cut out  each of the shapes with a utility knife. Affix the silhouettes to  spheres with wheat paste.

2.  When the paste is dry, pop and remove balloons and enlarge knot holes.  For party favors, fill pumpkins with candy and tiny toys; paste a circle  of orange tissue paper over the hole. For chandelier shades, slip the  spheres over bulbs. Do not use bulbs of higher than 40 watts.

This next shop has loads of items but they are a bit pricey

Want yourself a nice new clutch>here you go...

You can purchase these here: They have 4 styles

Want to make some of your own vintage ornaments like these?

How to Choose Halloween Decor...

When it comes to decorations, Halloween has become almost as popular as Christmas. People now spend hundreds of dollars choosing lights and inflatable figures. Not to mention the amount spent to power all of these decorations. With all the choices available, how do you choose Halloween decorations that will suit your home?

1 Choose a theme. Before you go shopping, you need to consider what type of theme you’re going for. Otherwise, you'll end up with both cute and scary Halloween decorations. Choosing a theme is easier than you might think. You simply need to ask yourself if you want a home that is inviting to children or adults. Once you’ve picked a theme, it will be much easier to choose Halloween decorations that compliment each other.

Consider the size of your yard. Nothing looks worse than a yard that is overrun with decorations. This means that you need to truly consider the size of your yard. As you choose different Halloween decorations, ask yourself if each piece will fit nicely in your yard or be crammed together. Truth be told, a few well placed pieces make a bigger impact than several pieces that are crammed into a small space.

Read more here:

  • Step 2
Consider the size of your yard. Nothing looks worse than a yard that is overrun with decorations. This means that you need to truly consider the size of your yard. As you choose different Halloween decorations, ask yourself if each piece will fit nicely in your yard or be crammed together. Truth be told, a few well placed pieces make a bigger impact than several pieces that are crammed into a small space.

  • Step 3
Look at your budget. While it is important to not overdo it, it’s also important to consider your budget. What this means is you shouldn’t spend the bulk of your budget on one item. When you choose Halloween decorations, make sure to spread out the cost. This will ensure that you have enough pieces, rather than one large piece.

  • Step 4
Think about energy use. Before you choose your Halloween decorations, think about energy costs. Many Halloween decorations are now electric, which means you will be using more power during October. Even though you will only be using more power in the evenings, the price can still add up. Choose your items carefully.

  • Step 5
Shop early. Halloween decorations should go up during the first week of October. That way, you and your neighbors have a chance to fully enjoy them. Of course, this also means that the good pieces will be snatched up in September. If you shop early, you’ll have a much better selection to choose from

    How Do You Celebrate Halloween?

I know myself, I just got rid of the cheap dollar store decorations and started making my own and buying reproduction and vintage items to display in my home.
I started making vignettes on top of tables, in front of the fireplace and on the fireplace mantle.
There are many great sites online if you google vintage Halloween that you can be on here for days.
I also started making my kids Halloween costumes instead of buying them in the store.  The kids get so many compliments on them.  Last year they went as karate kids.  The year before they went as a cowboy and firemen.
I still get a flutter when it is time to go trick or treating.  It brings back so many memories from my childhood.
My younger son never fails when it gets dark, he doesn't care how much candy he could get, the monsters are out to get him and he wants to go home LOL  We never fail to come out with a big pillowcase of candy anyway. I say pillowcase because that is what we use instead of the store bought plastic junk.
Maybe this year I will go to or have an adult Halloween party, should be fun.....
Soooo how do you celebrate Halloween?
